THE NLP IN BRIEF
The Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is an approach to communication, personal development and psychotherapy created in 1970 by Richard Bandler, then graduate student at the University of California, Santa Cruz and John Grinder, a professor in the University. They began to study together the characteristics of communication used by some excellent psychotherapists, capable of producing changes in people and cures effectively and continuously.
The acronym NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming NLP in English) refers to a stated connection between the neurological processes and behavioral patterns that have been learned through experience, and can be organized to achieve specific goals in life.
“P” as a behavioral programming: According to their perception and their own experiences, each of us has developed specific patterns of behavior, which it sees fit to the various aspects of his daily life. These “programs” of behavior are called “patterns” and everyone follows them unknowingly. They cause us to be who we are, even though sometimes we want to be different. The knowledge of these programs helps us to accept them and change them if necessary.
“N” as Neuro (Neurological Processes). Everyone creates their own destiny. This means that he constructs his own world through the way he perceives it. In fact, he has all the knowledge and skills to solve its problems. Theoretically, he is able to reach every goal you want to achieve. There is a human behavior that is not made of neurological processes: the nerves receive stimuli and transport them to the brain where they are filtered and processed. Our behavior is developed through the five senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste). With the help of our five senses we filter all the information reaching us. The external signals and stimuli penetrate inside us creating an “objective reality” that takes place, precisely, through our sensory perception. Each individual, however, perceives something different, in the sense that through their own sensory perceptions each of us creates its own world, or his own “subjective reality.” For example, in a restaurant, and it exhibited a nice red meat steak (objective reality). Every customer, however, associated with this his own personal experience (subjective reality), a customer is vegetarian another does not. One disgusted the other dreams of a moment when put between his teeth.
“L” as Linguistics. The words are the threads that bind in our inner world with the outside. Our language is the expression of our subjective perception. However the sense impressions of each person are unique, so to understand his inner world through the words he uses is very difficult. Even more difficult it is to express our inner personality in a language understandable to all. To keep the example of the steak, assumed to know a person who has never seen or eaten in his life a steak, try to explain its appearance, its smell, its taste:
The founders of NLP claim that NLP is able to tackle problems such as phobias, depression, disorders, habits, psychosomatic illnesses, and learning disorders, but their stated purpose is mainly to find ways to help people to have a life fuller and richer.
The main founders, Bandler and Grinder claimed that if the effective models of behavior of exceptional people can be modeled in the same way these models can be acquired by others.
In short, NLP is a model to describe the subjective world of our perceptions. Behind NLP is the belief that if we become aware of our behavioral patterns and unconscious of our programs, we are in conditions to change them at will. But if we have no idea what we would like to change, we do not even know how to tell if anything has changed. NLP is also a speculative attitude characterized by a sense of curiosity, adventure and desire to learn the skills necessary to understand which types of communication affect others. It ‘a scientific method based on the principle that all human behavior has a structure that can be modified and changed. Finally, it is a technology that allows humans to organize their own information and perceptions to achieve certain results. Ultimately NLP deals with the study of subjective experience of individuals to lead them towards the human and professional excellence.
